1. Saurath

Saurath is a tiny village located in Madhubani. This village is quite famous because it is home to the famous Somnath Mahadev temple. According to mythology, this village was the intellect center during King Janaka, who was the father of Devi Sita. Sourath has been mentioned multiple times in the Ramayana. It is believed that the famous Swayambhar Sabha for Devi Sita was organized in this village. Another interesting fact associated with the village is that the Somnath temple has the same Lingam of Lord Shiva, which was previously located in the Somnath Temple of Gujarat. According to common folklore, it is believed that two Maithili Brahmins brought the Lingam right before the Mahmud of Ghazni attacked the Gujarat temple. People believe Lord Shiva himself requested the Brahmins to take away his Lingam.

2. Kapileshwar Sthan

Kapileshwar Sthan is one of the most important temples located only 9 km from Madhubani. This temple becomes immensely crowded during the month of Shivratri as it is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Many Hindu devotees from all over India gather around there to seek blessings from Lord Shiva. The temple is named after “Kapil Muni” as the ashram of Kapil Muni is located only 2 km from the temple. Local people even believe that Kapil Muni himself installed the Lingam of Lord Shiva in the temple’s location.

The Maharaja of Darbhanga built the Kapileshwar Sthan temple near Madhubani, and it is located over an area of 52 hectares. When you reach there, you will feel a sense of calmness. While exploring Madhubani, you must visit the most developed village over there, Bhawanipur. As this village is quite close to the Pandaul Block, you will have no problem getting there. As the village has a railway station, you can visit there by getting on the right train from Madhubani quite quickly. The Bhawanipur village is pretty famous among Hindu devotes due to the sacred Baba Ugranath Mahadev Temple. Especially during the time of Maha Shivratri, the entire village is flocked with devotees from all around India. You will be surprised to know that many people walk all the way to the Shiv temple to offer the water of the sacred river Ganga. Some have even walked more than 100 km to reach there.

4. Nagar Fort

Nagar Fort is actually located in Rajnagar, which is situated only 13.7 km away from Madhubani. This fort was initially known as “Navlakha Palace,” and it was constructed by Maharaja Rameshwar Singh, the King of Darbhanga. Even though the palace was mostly destroyed during the disastrous earthquake of 1934, you can still see the evidence of a once magnificent residence amid the palace’s ruins. Presently, if you go there, you will only see a derelict building, but after hearing all the exciting stories related to the palace, you will understand its significance.

They also believe that the Goddess was so impressed by Kalidas’s talent and tenacity that she decided to bless him. While exploring Uchaitha, you will also get to see the Pathshala of Kalidas.

The Pathshala is located in the south-east direction of the temple. One of the most exciting things about the Bhagwati temple in Uchaitha is that the deity’s head is kept beside the idol. There is an interesting story behind that. According to local folklore, the King of Darbhanga, Maharaja Rameshwar Singh, wanted to reinstall the idol’s head. Still, Goddess Bhagwati appeared in his dream the night before the installation and asked him not to do it. That is why he ordered to keep the head right by the deity.
