What makes this railroad popular today is the scenic ride that goes through the Des Moines River Valley. This 11-mile journey in the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad valley lasts for over an hour. The ride takes participants over cornfields, lush woodlands, the Fraser mining town, and the popular Bass Point Creek High Bridge. Participants get the chance to enjoy the views around and underneath while experiencing the train journey. Or, for an extended experience, there is an optional dining cart in case someone wants to dine at the end.

Visitors can also explore the James H. Andrew Railroad Museum/ Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad in Boone. This open-air museum owns numerous locomotives and dozens of cars.

2. Explore the Matchstick Marvels Museum

Matchstick Marvels Museum is truly a marvel, a little world entirely of wooden matchsticks. The museum is located at 319 2nd St, Gladbrook, and is home to large-scale matchstick models and crafts. The collection here has over 70 artworks (big and small), all constructed with small wooden matchsticks by local artist Pat Acton. One of the most complex designs here includes the Notre Dame Cathedral, which is made with over 3 lakh matchsticks. Other notables include the World Trade Centre, and the United State Capitol made with over 5 lakh matchsticks. Earlier, Acton used to cut the brown tip of matchsticks though now he buys them without the tip directly from the supplier. His process of craft is still the same though today, he uses different techniques.

The Matchstick Marvels Museum operates from April through November and has a rotating display every month. The operating hours goes 1 pm to 5 pm, with admission free-ranging from $3 to $5.

3. Explore the High Trestle Trail

One of the most popular things to do in Iowa definitely is exploring the High Trestle Trail. This multi-purpose trail runs 25 miles through five towns and four counties of Iowa. Des Moines Farmers Market is a local market in Des Moines that attract residents and tourists alike. The market organizes in downtown Des Moines every Saturday from May through September. Museum’s first floor shows a 10-minute short film where farm toy aficionados talk about their collection and about toy production in Dyersville.
