History of the Monsoon Palace, Udaipur

The Monsoon Palace, as it is commonly known as, has an interesting past associated with it. The majestic palace was built under the order of Maharana Sajjan Singh who was the 72nd ruler of the great Mewar dynasty. Soon after he became the Rana in the year 1874, Maharana Sajjan Singh undertook a plethora of projects of civil work such as road and dam construction, water supply, developments in infrastructure and so on in the Udaipur city. Out of all these projects that he undertook, the majestic Monsoon Palace undoubtedly his most ambitious project that he began during the later years of his reign. However, unfortunately he passed away before watching the complete construction of the palace as per his vision of an astronomical observatory. Etymology of the Monsoon Palace, Udaipur

The majestic palace is widely known by two popular names, which are Sajjangarh Palace and the Monsoon Palace. As you can assume from the first name, the palace was named as Sajjangarh Palace after its initial builder, Maharaja Sajjan Singh. As far as the second name, Monsoon Palace is considered, the palace was named so because back in time, this palace was used by the royal family as a hunting lodge as well as to watch the monsoon clouds ascend. Hence, due to this very fact the Sajjangarh Palace got its second name of the Monsoon Palace.

Located on the Bansdara peak of the mighty Aravalli hills at a height of about 3100 feet above the sea level, the façade of the Monsoon palace is made up of stunning white marble. Sporting a traditional Rajasthani style of architecture, as per the plan laid out by Maharana Sajjan Singh, this palace was initially supposed to have nine stories.

However, due to the premature death of the King, this plan was shelved and the construction was carried out as per the instructions of his successor, Maharana Fateh Singh. The foundation of this majestic palace is laid out on grand marble pillars which in turn display a plethora of exclusive motifs of flowers and leaves carved all over its surface. As far as the palace walls are concerned, they are plastered artistically with lime mortar and are covered beautifully with detailed and intricate carvings, just like the pillars which adds on to the irresistible charm of the classy interior décor of the palace. Then comes the vast central court which has a stunning staircase that leads one up to the multiple rooms, spacious chamber and several quarters located on all the sides. There are high turrets and guards monitoring each of the towers of the palace. Another interesting fact about the Monsoon palace is that it housed an incredible underground harvesting structure with a cistern of a vast capacity of 195,500 litres. However, despite this grand capacity, it still proved inadequate in the arid conditions of the state which eventually resulted in the royal family abandoning the palace.

Opening Hours and Entry Fee of the Monsoon Palace, Udaipur

The Monsoon Palace is open for public visitors from morning to evening hours on all days of the week. So, you can visit this top tourist place in Udaipur anytime from 8 AM till 6 PM. On an average, a visitor spends about 2 to 3 hours exploring the sprawling complex of the Monsoon palace. However, it is always better to have some extra time in hand, in case you get lost in the architectural and natural beauty of this mesmerising palace. As far as the entry fee of the Monsoon Palace is concerned, you don’t have to worry much because the entry tickets are available at pretty nominal price. While the entry fee for the Indian citizens is just Rs. 10 per person but if you are a foreign traveller then you have to pay an entry fee of Rs. 80 per person. Apart from that, if you enter the palace premises riding an auto rickshaw or a car, then the visitors are required to pay an additional charge of Rs. 20 and Rs. 65 respectively.
