Historical Importance of Sewri Fort
The British built the Sewri fort sometime in the 1600s. They built the fort to ensure that they have a hand over the impending naval attacks. The Sewri fort has withstood attacks from various regimes and even changed some hands during its time. The regimes that tried to conquer the Sewri fort were the Angrias of Alibaug, the Pirates of Janjira, the Dhulaps, and the Siddhis.
Structures Inside the Sewri Fort
Like so many other urban forts, Sewri fort too does not have any structures inside. However, the Government has taken care of the outer structure, and you can see that most of the walls have a contemporary construction, to make up for the wear and tear that the fort must have gone through in its time.
One aspect to note is that though the authorities are building over the walls of the old forts, they are making painstaking efforts to retain the old design and shape of the buildings.
Once you pass through the main entrance of the Sewri fort, you come across a large courtyard that has a stepwell to go to the upper part of the Sewri fort.
Tourist Experience of Sewri Fort
The visit to the Sewri fort is underwhelming and does not have the ebbing thrill of visiting a place of historical importance. This fort is one of the few that do not have proper markings or directions on the roads leading to it. So, there is a good chance that you miss it and might have to ask people for directions.
Once you visit the Sewri fort, you will not be surprised when you find out that there’s precious little about the fort available online.
The top of the Sewri fort is scenic, and you get a magnificent view of the city from the top of the fort. Sewri is also famous for the chance to spot flamingos, so if you go there during the right season, you can even spend some time gazing at the flamingos.
The sad part is that you find absolutely nothing in the fort that might tell you about its history or even give some information.
There’s news now that the Government is planning to revamp the entire structure, adding a museum and an open-air restaurant as well.
