You may find it a bit surprising but, in the drought – prone state of Telangana, irrigation has existed for a few hundred years in small areas served by locally constructed village tanks. As a result, in the years around 1942 to 1952, the Government of Hyderabad submitted a scheme to Government of India, Planning commission with a dam proposal at Pochampadu village on river Godavari and dams on its tributaries namely the Manair and Kaddam rivers. The foundation of the project was laid down by the late Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India on July 26, 1963. After a lot of hard work, the water was first released into Kakatiya Main Canal in July 1970 and in July 1973 up to 36 km and 68 km respectively. However, the reservoir was first filled to its complete capacity of about 1091 ft, later in the year 1983.
