Day 1 in Shimla : Places to Visit

It’s time to take a break from the humdrum city routine and enjoy a beautiful two day trip to Shimla with your partner, friends and family. Day one promises to be a spiritual and adventure-filled day where you can explore the glory of nature and get a spiritual brush with sightseeing options in this capital city of Himachal Pradesh.

With an ancient history and strong cultural heritage to share, Shimla, with its small lanes and prominent scenic places, is a must-visit. Moreover, the “Pahadi or mountain” locals’ warmth is unbeatable and prompts people to reach out for this hill station with open arms. Start the famous tour from The Mall road!

The Mall and Ridge:

After unwinding and finishing your breakfast, start your “fun sessions” from the Ridge and Mall road in the city centre. The hundreds of shops and food joints will make your heart flutter with excitement. The Ridge is widely spread and very near Mall road. The surroundings ring with the clippity-clop of hooves of horses and the ranking laughter of travellers enjoying this magnificent tourist attraction.

Jakhu Temple:

Jakhu Temple on top of Jakhu Hill is a mesmerizing sight for tourists and is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. You can pay your respects to the giant majestic statue that seems to touch the skies at 108 feet.

The serene surroundings of the temple make it a true delight for people with a spiritual inclination. Sit back and enjoy the pleasant weather and the pleasing natural sounds.

The whole ambience of the temple is a visual treat for the eyes. The travellers relish sitting in tranquil surroundings under the shade of the towering deodar and oak trees. The vast spread-out complex holds the temple in its centre. Kids also love to prance about in the little playground close by.

The hill is home to several naughty monkeys who don’t spare a minute trying to grab foodstuffs from the people trekking up towards the temple. It is no surprise that many people have lost their purses and other valuables to these monkeys, so tread carefully and try not to get too close or feed these mischievous animals.

A ropeway connects this famous landmark to the Jakhu Temple, and this place of worship is well connected by road. At the end of the Ridge is the sturdy ropeway that goes all the way to the top. Passengers can book a place and ride the ropeway to the temple in about 15 minutes.

The ropeway ride to the temple costs approximately Rs. 500 for adults and about Rs. 400 for kids per trip. Six individuals can ride at one time in each cable car. The temple has no entrance fee.

Kalibari Temple:

Kalibari temple in Shimla was built in 1845 and is a famous religious destination dedicated to Goddess Kali or Shyamala. In fact, Shimla got its name from the revered Goddess, and the temple is very popular. Situated in Jakhu Hill, enclosed by tall green trees and looking over the mountain ranges, this temple looks stunning and ethereal in the wilderness.

Dorje Drak Monastery:

Dorje Drak Monastery, or the TDAC Nyingmapa Monastery, built in 1984, is influenced by Buddhism and has plenty of revered deities and artefacts of Tibetan culture showcased here to woo the interest of the travellers. The Tibetan exiles run this monastery, and seeing the monks meditating and carrying out their regular prayers is mesmerizing for the onlooker.

Each nook and corner of this religious place rings loudly with the preachings and teachings of Lord Buddha. No entry fees are needed to roam and explore this holy shrine, but people can donate money if they like it. Relax in the tranquil atmosphere of this monastery and meditate here to feel solace and serenity. You can visit here any day of the week from 10 AM to 5 PM.

Kufri:

About 15 to 20 kms from Shimla lies the glorious hilltop known as Kufri. The unmatched beauty of the lush green forests and tall majestic sloping mountains gives the travellers an opportunity to ski. Getting a chance to indulge in this sport and many other energetic activities at this popular tourist destination is a massive attraction for adventure lovers and trekkers.

It’s a sight to see people tobogganing and zipping downhill on their sledges, zip lining and mountain biking. There is a designated parking space for cars and taxis so there is no mad rush for getting a space.

Park, your vehicle, ride to the hilltop on a horse or enjoy the beautiful surroundings as you walk up. The path to the hilltop is tedious, and the terrain is tough and rugged, but it is full of adventure and fun. Go for it!

As the sun sets and the day ends, it’s time to move back and hit the bed. You must be tired so go to the hotel and eat because you have plenty of adventure waiting for you the next day.

It’s common to see groups of people clicking pictures, munching on yummies, dressed in local Himachali clothes and just loitering around prancing to musical tunes. The Ridge is always bustling with energy and has hundreds of tourists exploring every nook and corner. Everyone visiting here is trying to understand the town, its history, and people’s lives way back when the Britishers had made Shimla their home.
