Changing of the Guard at Syntagma Square: Must-See Event in Athens, Greece (2024)
The ceremony of changing the guard is observed every Sunday around 11 am in front of the Hellenic Parliament across Syntagma Square in Athens. Most visitors gather in the square and often find it difficult to get a good place to see the routine of changing the guard.
The guard before the ceremony stands in a perfectly still position like a statue. Every thirty minutes during summer and every one hour during winter the guards change their duty. The ceremony is conducted by the special unit of the Greek army known as “The Evzones” or “Tsoliades”. The Evzones are considered brave and courageous Greeks. In the present time, the soldiers are recognized as presidential guards.
