The ancient stadium in Athens is the only stadium that was built from marble stones. The stadium was built in 556 BC for the Panathenaic Games. The stadium is 2585 years old. The ancient Panathenaic Games were scheduled every 4 years from 566 BC to the 3rd century. The track was 670 feet long and 110 feet wide. The stadium was big enough to hold 50,000 people in olden days and as of 1896.
Panathenaic stadium of Athens was expanded after 1896 and at present 80,000 people are accommodated in the stadium. The stadium was restored several times. The stadium was used during the recent time for athletic events known as Zappas Olympics in 1870 and 1875. The Panathenaic stadium was renovated and used for the Olympic venue in 2004.
