The church was built in the 9th century and located in a wooded area around the base of Philopappos Hill. The Church of St. Demetrius Loumbardiaris in Athens was restored several times during the last several centuries. The walls and interior of the church were periodically repaired. The church was used for religious purposes since the early 8th century.
